From the teacher:
"For the first time ever my school in Bushwick, Brooklyn has decided to begin a Gifted & Talented program. For far too long, these individuals' needs have not been met. They have been passed off as "good students" and left to reach grade standards. Their capabilities never fully explored and their potential never fully reached. Many get bored and restless when the material gets too easy and before long, their abilities plateau.
Next year, we will begin "phase one" of the Gifted & Talented program. First we will select a handful of students based on testing and teacher referral. With parental consent, we will start an afterschool enrichment program wherein the students will create their own school newspaper. The teacher in charge will act as guide to these students and will allow them to learn and discover through exploration and troubleshooting. The students will choose their own topics for stories, research and interview subjects, write drafts, edit and revise each others stories and take photographs or create illustrations. Next they will take a very active role in the production of the newspaper. They will do their own layout and assist in the printing, assembling and distribution of the newspaper. Most importantly, they will be the decision makers and solve problems."
