Project Info
Companions Circle Church Inc. has offered free non-sectarian supportive and self-help counseling as well as information and referral to community resources and advocacy services to individuals and families in our neighborhood since 1998. Now we want to expand the outreach of Roadscrossing Clinic by working with the Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling (WCPG) to develop awareness and intervention programs on Problem Gambling for local clergy and their congregations. Clergy and congregations can be reachable, effective portals to help and hope for individuals and families living with and impacted by Problem Gambling.
There is an immediate growing need for specialized training for clergy and congregation leaders in recognizing the signs of Problem Gambling which usually present first as many other types of ongoing troubles or crises - from depression to debt. People often turn to their faith community for assistance when they are overwhelmed by crisis, so a key to quicker intervention and the beginning of relief and recovery is their clergy and congregation leadership knowing how to intervene, knowing the professional and community resources available as remedies, and knowing how to support the ongoing recovery process. The need for Roadscrossing Clinic's new outreach is urgent and growing because Problem Gambling is becomming a wider spread and deeper root cause of many interlinked family and community problems. This is because social and online gambling is becoming more and more accessible and available. The social and community problems interlinked with Problem Gambling are pervasive, compelling, and impact everyone who lives in the city - crime, poverty, violence, child and elder abuse, chemical dependency, and many more.
Companions Circle Church Inc. is raising start-up funding for this new Problem Gambling outreach to local clergy and congregations to cover the costs of additional community organizing staff hours, office supplies, and workshop space rental (when necessary) for a period of six months. Educational materials and workshop presenting will be supplied by the Wisconsin Council of Problem Gambling (WCPG). Participating congregations will be asked to help through in-kind donations such as refeshments, meeting space, publicity, and volunteers.
