Project Info
GFS believes that celebrating families and traditions is an important way of empowering the families we serve. Therefore, each year GFS holds an annual community outreach event. Let's Read! / ¡Vamos a Leer! is designed to promote community awareness of the importance of early literacy and parent involvement.
Each September, the event reaches 150-200 East San José parents and their children ages three to eight. During the event, families participate in literacy activities and are given free books to take home (often their first book) so that they can continue to enjoy reading and strengthen their literacy skills.
Let's Read! / ¡Vamos a Leer! is a part of GFS' East San José Reads early literacy initiative that includes Read-2-Me for pre-schoolers, the BEST after-school literacy program for 1st-3rd graders, and the Severns Children's Library.
"Coming to the [Let's Read! / ¡Vamos a Leer!] event taught me how important it is to read to my [infant] daughter. We read to her regularly using the only three books we own, which are the ones we got at the event."
- Veronica, Let's Read! / Vamos a Leer! participant
