In-classroom sessions consist of one to two hours of hands-on training done by LEEP naturalists and local experts. They come to the school bringing artifacts, materials, equipment, and their expertise, which may include multimedia presentations and in-classroom experiments. The training brings students and experts together and helps teachers keep their classes exciting and interesting. Students’ faces light up when they can hold the bones of an animal they are studying and meet the people who actually work with them. Field Studies are designed to reinforce classroom studies and encourage students to bring their experiences to life in the real world. Lessons may include a boat ride to a barrier island, an interactive trip to the SC Aquarium, a trip to the beach or nearby park, or an excursion to a research facility. These trips are incentive for students to pay attention and do well. It all starts to make sense when they get fully immersed into nature. This is where we see real changes in the perception of students who have never seen an ocean or an estuary. All classes are designed to correlate with South Carolina Standards for Science and Social studies for each grade and include information from PACT tests. LEEP coordinates with teachers by scheduling programs that fit in with their existing lesson plans. LEEP also helps schools to find funding and transportation. Because teachers and administrators already have enough to do, we work to relieve some of their pressure and help them become more effective.
It only takes $75.00 to sponsor one student or $3000.00 to sponsor an entire class!!
LEEP has purchased our own bus to asssist in transporting students to our field study classes. LEEP's Bio-Bus is not just a bus, it is a teaching tool as LEEP has turned our bus into a bio-diesel bus. We are now able to teach our students the importance of our environment and how we can use alternative energy to fuel our bus.
