Project Info
On October 17th, 2007, a talented group of freshman at the Algiers Technology Academy (Tech Academy) will venture outside New Orleans on a two-day trip to Silicon Valley. The students participating in the event will be selected by Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. (Principal, Tech Academy), based on an essay contest. The contest will have students address innovative ways that technology can be used to improve their lives and better their community.
Those students whose essays are selected will be invited on a trip to Silicon Valley to tour high-profile technology companies Google, Dreamworks, and Facebook. They will also visit the Technology Museum for Innovation, enjoy an informal gathering with successful young entrepreneurs, and be given a guided tour of Stanford’s Computer Science Department by Stanford’s Society of Black Scientists and Engineers.
The goal of this project is for these students to return from the trip inspired to excel in the technology curriculum being offered by the Tech Academy, and moving forward, use technology to better themselves, as well as the New Orleans community, in the ways described in their essays.
Please donate now to help make this project a success. The project is estimated to cost $13,000. The costs include the following: airfare ($6,000), hotel ($3,500), bus rental & gas ($3,000), and meals ($1,500). We hope to raise a significant portion of the total through online donations.
