Project Info
The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council has received National Fire Plan Grants from the US Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management to start Defensible Space Chipping Programs in Santa Clara County. These Federal grants total about $90,400 and we have raised about $20,000 in matching funds and donations from local companies, agencies and individuals. We need $4,000 in Program Income to meet our goals for these grants.
There have already been several wildfires in Santa Clara County this year. Many areas of the County are at risk for wildfires because they have expansive accumulations of natural fuels and are very similar to the Oakland Hills area in Alameda County where a wildland fire in 1991 caused major losses of life and structures. Terrain, vegetation and accessibility conditions in Santa Clara County create the potential for similar events to occur here.
These funds will be used for our Defensible Space Chipping Programs which help homeowners and residents reduce the hazardous vegetation and other fuels around their homes. These funds are used in fire prone areas of Santa Clara County for three purposes:
1. To provide chipping services for homeowners who can prepare their own material for chipping.
2. For a Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) for seniors and/or others with physical and financial limitations which prevent them from doing their own preparation for chipping.
3. To provide Community Outreach and Education Programs to educate homeowners and residents to create and maintain Defensible Space around their homes.
The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council is a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation. Our mission is “Mobilizing the people of Santa Clara County to protect their homes, communities and environment from wildfires.” Our participants include the major fire agencies, many volunteer fire organizations, local utility companies, parks and open space organizations, city and county government representatives, neighborhood associations, and concerned individuals who share our vision to educate and mobilize residents to reduce the risks of wildfires in Santa Clara County.
