Education for Change presents a wonderful opportunity to help those who are less fortunate by providing them with language acquisition, job readiness, computer and other daily living skills and school readiness to their small children. Illiteracy and lack of access to educational opportunities is a growing problem in our society especially for newly arrived, immigrant women and their children. With the current discussion about new immigration legislation, Education for Change takes on new significance as an essential avenue to improve the quality of life of so many of our immigrant neighbors.

Through the Education for Change project, students attend classes Monday through Friday from September to June. All activities are aimed at increasing skills, dignity, and status of women that have limited access to educational programs-99% live below the poverty level. Local immigrant women are suffering many hardships due to barriers to education, dignity, health care, employment, cultural competency, and literacy. Our client’s ability to overcome these barriers is further aggravated by the poverty that often renders them unable to meet even their basic needs, including food and shelter. Furthermore, these women are typically not afforded the same opportunities as their male counterparts because necessity requires them to devote their time and limited resources to caring for their children.

A gift of $1,000 will provide education for one low-income, ethnic minority women for one year and on-site childcare and early childhood education for her small child. This student will acquire English language, basic computer, health awareness, and life skills to improve their quality of life. Participants in the Education for Change project will increase their skills, improve their literacy levels, and enhance their access to culturally sensitive skills training programs while having access to computers and information technology.

Your support of the Education for Change project will provide previously underserved socio-economically challenged women with the opportunity to access education that will improve their lives and assist them in being greater participants in our society.
