Project Info
As part of its K-12 Educational Programming Curriculum, Opera San Jose presents a student matinee performance for each of its four mainstage productions every season. This season, the last production is Mozart's The Magic Flute, an opera that is especially good for introducing the art form to children. The matinee performance, which is free of charge to students, is presented at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose. The production features singers in full make-up and costume accompanied by the Opera San Jose Orchestra.
Since the company was founded in 1984, more than 100 student matinees have been presented free of charge to approximately 30,000 Santa Clara County students. The program continues to be well received, and it is the company's hope that it will continue to make the art form available to those underserved students that would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend an opera. Study guides are provided to schools in order to assist teachers in preparing their classes for these performances.
Funding is needed in support of production expenses as well as artist salaries.
Now approaching its 24th season, Opera San José has established a reputation for being exceptionally well managed. The company is financially sound, and while it has continually expanded its programs, has never run a deficit, something of a rarity among arts organizations. It was recently given its second consecutive four-star rating by Charity Navigator for its record of exemplary fiscal management
