Project Info
San Jose Youth Symphony needs a xylophone! Symphonic music from the 1900s and later often uses this instrument, which SJYS does not own, and our Philharmonic Orchestra, the most advanced group in the SJYS family, needs to perform this music as part of their complete orchestra education. And our audiences deserve to a range from Bernstein to Gershwin too!
Unfortunately, currently our percussionists don’t get a chance to practice the xylophone part until the day of the concert, when we borrow or rent and then transport this large, fragile instrument to our concert venue. This situation is hard on the musicians who need to practice, hard on the orchestra who need to hear this instrument for cues and sound levels, and hard on the producers who need to make all the arrangements.
Owning this instrument would greatly intensify the musical education of the percussionists as well as the entire orchestra, and would save SJYS money in the long run. It will also attract new percussionists to our wonderful symphony orchestra, which is always welcome.
