Project Info
In recent years, cuts in arts education in the schools in the Bay Area are reflected in the numbers of young people who attend choral concerts and join up to sing with community choruses. Many local schools and youth choruses are doing a great job in rebuilding chorus programs but it takes time. It is essential for us to encourage young singers to attend concerts and sing-along events so that they can see that choral singing can be a life-long passion. We already offer 50% discounts on tickets to middle and high school students to our six-week Summer Sings events but to expand this program to include discounts on all our concert tickets, we need support from the community. We not only have to make up the income lost by offering deep discounts but will also incur additional expenses in promoting this program to all the local high schools, middle schools and youth choruses. For FY08, we will have an annual budget of $181,000 and 20% of the income is generated by single ticket sales. With underwriting of $5,000, we can begin to expand the discount program to include ALL our concerts throughout the season and our other community sing-along events. These young people are our future and they will inherit a legacy of glorious music which they, in turn, can share with the wider community. We begin our new season on July 1 and we will evaluate the program in June 2008.
