Project Info
“I am so happy that Project HIRED staff saw something in me that was marketable…it was nice to know that someone else believed in me…Thank you, thank you! - Ruby Hillard, Project HIRED client, Receptionist, HIP, Inc.
Finding the help you need in a job search can be challenging, especially if you are disabled! Project HIRED is often called a “well-kept secret”. We are seeking $5,000 as well as volunteer hours to upgrade our website and create online marketing "buzz" in the disabled community as well as staffing managers at businesses.
Many disabled job seekers have hidden or multiple disabilities (e.g. dyslexia, severe diabetes) and may not be referred by other agencies to Project HIRED for job search support. Disabled adults may feel reluctant or ill-equipped to discuss their disabilities with staffing agencies and potential employers due to the stigma attached to mental health disabilities, visible disabilities, and chronic illnesses, and therefore take survival jobs or live on public assistance. Skilled disabled adults who had access to accommodations during their education can find the job hunting experience daunting, but do not know where to get assistance once they have graduated.
Employers are often hesitant to interview or hired disabled workers - they may not know that the average cost of accomodating a disabled worker is less than $200, and the rewards you get from a diversified workforce are immense!
An estimated 16% or more adults have a disability, and as the baby boomer workforce ages, this percentage is forecasted to continue to grow. 50% or more disabled adults are unemployed. Workers who acquire a disability in adulthood find their careers derailed, and often they have to switch to a different field. On average, it takes twice as long for a disabled adult to find employment vs. the general population.
The impact on the lives of these disabled individuals is huge. The average wage increase of a successfully placed client is over $500 per week, or $26,000 per year. At least 50% have been unemployed for 6 months or more. The increase in personal pride and independence is immeasurable.
Help us spread the word about how Project HIRED can assist disabled job seekers!
