Many people think that dogs or puppies can’t begin training until they are several months old. At the Assistance Dog Institute, we did not believe this was true, and began researching early puppy training, basing our training on learning methods that work with very young children. It worked!

We start training our puppies when they are only 3 weeks old and have just opened their eyes. We keep training sessions very short and fun, and the puppies learn to love learning. What’s more, the early training makes them better service dogs. The puppies develop problem solving skills and become more confident and better able to deal with new experiences because they start learning how to think as well as how to communicate and bond with people when they are very young.

By the time our puppies are 3 months old, they already know most of the commands and skills they will use as service dogs! Our research has found that skills learned early stay with the puppies. Even if the dog doesn’t practice a skill for a few months, the dog never forgets what he or she learned as a young puppy.

A contribution to this project enables us to continue training our young puppies and learning more and more about what they are capable of doing!
