Project Info

As the largest fine arts provider in the South Bay region, The San Jose Museum of Art is dedicated to improving the quality and quantity of arts learning opportunities for San Jose youth. Many of SJMA’s neighborhood schools lack resources or expertise in the arts and come to the Museum for genuine, high-quality arts education experiences for their students.

Art is a universal language, a tool for communication and expression, which students with limited English language proficiency need in order to succeed. In San Jose, a city whose immigrant population exceeds the national average, and whose residents speak over 50 different languages, arts education is immeasurably valuable to strengthening a child’s ability to communicate effectively, express personal ideas and develop positive self-esteem.

Your donation will help the Museum bring free field trips to the most deserving of public schools, schools with no or limited arts resources, and ensures that teachers are provided with high-quality pre-visit materials that include a standards-based unit plan to help their students prepare for a rewarding museum visit. The unit plan contains historically and culturally relevant information about works of art from current exhibitions, a transparency of an artwork from the Museum, and guidelines for facilitating a critical dialogue about the art they experience. During the Museum visit, professional gallery teachers and artists conduct highly participatory and interdisciplinary Museum tours, and lead children in an engaging hands-on art activity. $10,000 will provide 1000 students with a 1-hour guided tour followed by a 1-hour hands-on studio lesson that reinforces their gallery experience.

As UCLA’s James Catterall states, “When we study the arts, we also learn new ways of non-linear thinking, self-expression and communication, life skills essential to the workplace. The youth of today are the future workforce, and arts education will provide them with tools critical to their success."
