Caring Communities
How we treat animals in our society reflects how we treat one another. The chain of spousal abuse, child abuse and escalating violence towards others has been compellingly linked with early exposure to animal cruelty. Equally compelling is the growing evidence that the most important way we can prepare our children for a successful adulthood is to help them develop Emotional Intelligence. EI helps individuals cope with the stresses of the modern world, maintain healthy interpersonal relationships and have a positive and proactive role in community life.
Caring Communities is an 8-week program designed to help third graders practice life skills such as empathy, responsibility, and citizenship by exploring human-animal connections in the classroom. Students will learn how to read animal body language and practice strategies for staying safe, they will discover how our actions affect animals in our community and will implement projects that will make the world a better place for animals.
Each student will make and keep their own Caring Communities journal. Every week, a letter will be given to that child’s parent or guardian that will help the family share in the child’s enjoyment and learning.
