Be a BUS Benefactor for kids who need it!

Humane Society Silicon Valley

THE NEED
For schools that can’t afford to transport children here, HSSV provides busing scholarships, which is usually the most expensive part of any field trip. HSSV wants to continue to offer this important service to teachers and the students they serve because educating the community can help save animals’ lives now and in the future. It costs $7 per child, and $350 can provide a busing scholarship to schools in need, which would bring 50 children to the center for the “Kind Kids Field Trip” program.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND
“Kind Kids Field Trips” is a free education program provided by Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV).

Disadvantaged school children from local Title I schools actively learn about issues like pet overpopulation and what companion animals need to thrive in a home, and practice specific ways to help homeless animals in our community.

Since February, HSSV has already provided more than 1,000 elementary school with the opportunity to take an immersive and interactive field trip to our Animal Community Center.

The majority of our “Kind Kids” have never been to an animal shelter before, however they have more than two pets in their homes. Many are not familiar with spaying or neutering, or why it’s important to keep pets inside. When asked how many have seen a stray animal, 95% raise their hands.

THE IMPACT
Participating teachers say that the program has “significantly increased” their students’ understanding of companion animal issues and how to help them. For example, during his field trip, 8-year old Alejandro told us that when he got home, he was going to ask his parents if their puppy was spayed or neutered. For children like Alejandro, learning the importance of spaying or neutering early on, can go a long way in ending pet homelessness in the years ahead.
