Project Info

Recently the Santa Cruz SPCA received an urgent request from a Central Valley Animal Shelter volunteer to rescue three older dogs that the volunteer staff had fallen in love with: a purebred Boxer, Etta, a purebred Brittany Spaniel, Sweet Pea, and Sasha, a Beagle mix. All three dogs arrived in the same transport.

What occured after they arrived has forever changed the lives of the staff and volunteers here at the Santa Cruz SPCA. Sweet Pea, the blind Spaniel, was sick, dehydrated and matted. As the groomers shaved her, they found the results of her being sprayed with water day after day in the triple digit heat; hundreds of living things making a home in her fur. Sweet Pea, because of lack of water and the heat, left us after days of vet care and life saving measures surrounded by the staff of the SPCA, who cared for, loved and nurtured her in her last days.

Etta, a purebred Boxer, sat in the previous shelter, gang kenneled day after day in the heat. Often she was too weak to get up and reach the water bowl, other stronger, younger dogs taking the food before she could get to the empty bowl. Sadly, Etta went without water too long and her kidneys failed.

Sasha, an 8 year old Beagle mix arrived frightened, filthy and dehydrated. Sasha was taken in by a foster family where she was nursed back to health. This loving dog loves belly rubs and wants to be part of a forever home. She would be the perfect companion for a quiet home or a senior.

The plight of older animals in shelters across the nation is very grim. Very few senior animals make it out alive. The Santa Cruz SPCA does everything possible to save them.

This time of year, shelters are bursting at the seams as families surrender the pets they can no longer afford.

If you would like to help animals such as Sasha, please consider donating today. In the past 12 months, the Santa Cruz SPCA has rescued over 1,000 animals and placed 99.7% of them into loving homes.

Please include these animals in your holiday preparations!
