This unique fund enables the SPCA to provide extensive veterinary care for sick, injured, abused or neglected animals who would otherwise have to be euthanized. The fund covers the cost of the surgeries, medication and other treatments that an animal may need before they are to be made available for adoption. By giving animals a second chance, this special fund directly saves lives.

Some of the recipients of the Second Chance Fund include:

*Lucky, a terrier-hound mix, fell victim to improper containment in a pick up truck and was dragged from the back of the truck at high speeds on Highway 1. Lucky received numerous surgeries, including a leg amputation, before being adopted by an adoring family.

*Bella, a tiny puppy, who was found frightened and wandering a city street after being hit by a car. After hip and leg surgery and an extensive recovery in a foster home, Bella is now living in a loving home.

*Stevie Wonder, a deaf and blind Aussie-mix that was just hours from being euthanized at an area shelter. Thanks to the second chance fund Stevie is showing everyone who doubted him just how much appreciation and love of life he really has.

*Annabelle, a 6-year-old Black Lab that had to be given up by her family because they could not afford the surgery to fix her broken leg. Annabelle was scheduled to be euthanized, but instead was saved by the SPCA's Second Chance fund and is now living happily in her forever home.

“The Second Chance Fund gives us an opportunity to rehabilitate and care for animals that would never have had a chance in the past”, states Lisa Carter, Director of the Santa Cruz SPCA.

The Second Chance Fund brings the Santa Cruz SPCA closer to its dream of finding each and every unwanted animal a permanent and loving home.
