PROJECT
1,000 books for kids learning to read
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a literacy program that unites two of children’s greatest needs into one fluid service: healthcare and literacy instruction. ROR’s mission is to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric health care. At every well-child check-up for over 26,000 kids each year, pediatric providers in Santa Clara County give each young child a new, developmentally appropriate book to take home and read with parents.

Project Info
Children who cannot read at grade-level fall behind in all subjects rapidly. 35% of American children enter kindergarten unprepared to learn, most lacking the language skills that are the prerequisite of reading proficiency. The proportion is even higher among children growing up in poverty. 10-15% of school-age children have learning disabilities or ADHD and are at a high risk for substance abuse, school failure, criminal activity, and welfare dependency.
Reach Out and Read addresses these challenges by engaging families during their regular health check-ups, with physicians issuing “prescriptions” for families to take home and read the new book provided to them.
Physician screening for developmental delays is also a part of the check-up visit, and children with identified developmental delays or other special needs are referred to specialists for further services, ensuring that problems are addressed quickly before the adverse effects are fully realized in a school setting.
Our goal of raising $2,500 will buy a one month’s supply of books for one of our neediest health clinics in East San Jose. These 1,000 books will be distributed to children ages 0-5, primarily low-income Latino children, to engage kids in reading at an early age and to make sure that parents have the books and skills to read with their children at home.
The VMC Foundation is committed to raising funds to improve the health and quality of life for residents across Santa Clara County, California. Our efforts help to provide healthcare to the county’s working poor, unemployed, and their children. The majority of patients served by the VMC Foundation are low-income and do not have any private health insurance.
