Project Info
The Technology Access Program at Valley Medical Center utilizes technology for the benefit of people with disabilities and families with injured or sick children. As the busiest hospital in Silicon Valley, our staff has unique access to individuals and families soon after acquiring a disability, or experiencing a serious illness. Technology is critical to speeding the process of rehabilitation and recovery by linking patients and families to resources and support in the outside world.
Our goal is to raise enough funding to purchase 15 new laptops ($600 each) for the program, enabling more patients to reconnect with the outside world and identify the resources they will need to be independent and self-sufficient community members when they leave the hospital setting.
The Technology Access Program incorporates special adaptive technologies, including alternative input devices that allow patients to control a computer through a means other than a standard keyboard or mouse, such as an oversized keyboard or a one-hand keyboard. Patients also utilize pointing devices that allow them to control a cursor without using their hands. These types of devices include a sip and puff system through which patients control a cursor by inhaling and exhaling, a head mouse, joysticks, trackballs, and touch screens.
The VMC Foundation is committed to raising funds to improve the health and quality of life for residents across Santa Clara County, California. Our efforts help to provide healthcare to the county’s working poor, unemployed, and their children. The majority of patients served by the VMC Foundation are low-income and do not have any private health insurance.
