Our approach empowers patients and family members because we are able to clarify a diagnosis, make suggestions that enhance treatment choices, or even confirm the benefits of an existing treatment course. Some are looking for confirmation of their diagnosis before proceeding with a treatment, while others are seeking help in sorting out difficult choices. We provide patients and family members with the clarity and direction they need to manage their disease.

Thesecondopinion offers
• Clarity: We condense critical and sometimes difficult to understand information into simpler more humanistic terms in order to explain a medical diagnosis
• Confidence: We can confirm the benefits of an existing treatment course or, as is the case over 87% of the time, we may make suggestions that improves treatment options
• Compassion: We are a small non-profit dedicated to helping cancer patients and their families address a difficult situation and make choices that help to manage their disease

Our program helps overcome the following barriers:
• Requesting a second opinion from a medical facility panel does not mean you will get one. With us, all it takes is a phone call from the patient to start the process
• If a Review Panel is convened by a medical facility panel, the patient does not meet the panel which leaves questions and concerns unanswered.
• If a health plan provides a second opinion option, coverage is limited to one physician representing a single specialty, and the patient does not meet the doctor. Our panels provide physicians from different specialties, usually from a different hospital, who all are volunteers
• Vulnerable populations are often prohibited from accessing services not covered by insurance such as a multidisciplinary Review Panel such as ours. Since we do not charge for services, we are able to serve those who, because of where they live, may not have access to the most current medical information, those who are on disability, those who are retired or on a fixed income, and those who are from low-income or underserved communities.

Thesecondopinion provides a service not duplicated by any other agency in the United States and is truly unique because
• We utilize the services of volunteer physicians from different disciplines and different medical facilities to provide experienced professional opinions
• Instead of being outside the review process, our program requires patients and families to be in the loop, to appear in person before a Review Panel comprised of 4 to 7 physicians,to take part in a shared dialogue and to ask questions and express concerns directly to medical specialists
• 100% of our funding comes from private support; we do not receive any government assistance nor do we bill insurance companies
• We do not charge for services; we even provide Interpreters if needed
