Beginning June 20th 2008, Santa Cruz County suffered a devastating slew of fires (Please see: President Bush Declares State of Emergency For Nor Cal Fire Regions http://www.nbc11.com/news/16741137/detail.html). Following the Trabing, Martin and Summit fires, which displaced 875 animals in Santa Cruz County, the Santa Cruz SPCA contacted local veterinarians with an offer to pay medical bills of animals whose families lost their homes in the fires. Soon enough, the shelter began receiving calls for help. Five dogs and cats were severely injured and the families, having lost everything that they own, could not afford veterinary care.
To prevent surrenders and euthanasia of these animals, the Santa Cruz SPCA offered to cover veterinary and boarding expenses so that the animals, Julip, Flyboy, Tigger, Chicken and Catfish could be treated and remain with their families. The Santa Cruz SPCA has assumed responsibility for veterinary expenses and boarding beginning June 21 and continuing to the present. We will continue to provide care until the families are able to resume care for their pets.
Julip arrived at the vet with severe burns and singed fur. Even her whiskers had been burned off, and her fur was completely gone in many places. Julip’s owner, Erinn had been undergoing chemotherapy for Ovarian Cancer, and with the expenses of her own medical treatment along with the extensive damage caused to her home in the fires, she did not know how she would be able to pay for Julip’s medical care (newspaper story: http://www.scsextra.com/story.php?sid=77697). Julip needed to have one of her legs amputated, as well as skin grafts and several surgeries to save her remaining limbs. Julip first arrived at Westside Animal hospital on June 23, 2008 and will receive her final treatment on September 21, 2008.
Julip is now back at home with Erinn. Her owner brings her back to Westside Animal Hospital every 3-4 days to have her paws re-wrapped. The pads on her front paws were saved, and her amputated leg has healed nicely. One paw remains wrapped, but the vet anticipates that it will be healed by the final wrap removal on the 21st. Her fur and whiskers have re-grown, and the veterinarian states that she is “Progressing very well”. She still has a long road to recovery as her tissue re-grows and she regains her sense of smell, but her owner Erinn reports that Julip’s “Spirits are good” and that she is steadily recovering.
In total the Santa Cruz SPCA paid vet expenses for five severely injured animals, totaling over $17,000 by the end of July.
