Project Info

The Children's Best for Achievement Program is an after school literacy program with a strong parent involvement component for 1st - 3rd grade students that are scoring between the 30th and 60th percentile on standardized tests for literacy. These children do not qualify for other school intervention programs but are not doing as well as needed to be up to grade level.

The program uses a structured curriculum developed by GFS. Evaluation of the children's literacy skills , their interest in reading , and the parents' participation in their children's literacy activities are conducting using pre- and post-test evaluation instruments. Evaluation results from 2003-2004 demonstrate that children increase their reading fluency, their listening and reading comprehension, and their interest in reading while participating in the BEST Program.

The goals of the program are:

• Improve children's basic literacy skills
• Increase children's motivation for reading
• Increase children's self-esteem
• Increase parents' participation in their children literacy education

Results:

• 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children in our BEST Literacy Program had an improvement of 24% more on their standardized test scores than their classmates who did not participate.

"I liked Parent-Child Reading Time because my mom came to read with me."
- Rene, 1st grader and BEST Program Participant

"I'm glad my daughter will participate in this program because it pushes me as a parent to do the things with her that I know I am supposed to do, but don't always find time for."
- Elizabeth, Parent of a 1st grader BEST Program participant
