Give a Child a Quality Education - The Gift that Keeps Giving

St. Francis School

I am the principal of St. Francis School, an inner-city, Catholic school in Cleveland, Ohio. This school has been under the direction of the Sisters of Notre Dame and has been operating in Cleveland for over 100 years. We are a K-8 school with over 200 children. We provide quality education to low-income, urban children. The student body is 97% African-American and 3% Hispanic. Many of the children who live around our school want to come here but their parents can't afford the tuition. 86% of our families live well below the poverty level. I have started a Sponsor Program aimed at giving these children the opportunity to receive a quality education. Most of the children begin here in Kindergarten at five years old. We give them a firm foundation in the basic skills of reading, math and English. We also offer a state-of-the-art technology program, an arts program and a sports program. A good education will make it possible for these children to move on to high school and attend college. The high school graduation rate from the public school in our area is about 36%. Most of our children, when they graduate from St. Francis, go on to private high schools and then on to college. Quality education is what these children need more that anything. Would you like to be a sponsor? Tuition is $3450 per year/per child. Donations, in any amount, are appreciated.

At this time of the year I have many parents calling and asking, "How can I get my child into your school?". I tell them the admission procedure and give them the tuition rates. Most say they can only afford about $50 a month toward the $345 monthly tuition. They are so disappointed because they want good education for their children. If I had more sponsorship money, I could offer the possibility of a quality education to more of these low-income families. When the families apply, I have them fill out a Private School Aid Service (PSAS) application for financial aid. I receive a report from PSAS stating the family need. My tuition assistance from the Sponsor Program runs out quickly. Please help build this fund. Donations can be designated to the St. Francis School Endowment fund which uses only the interest or to the Sponsor Program where the total amount goes toward a child's tuition. My current endowment is a little over $500,000. This does not generate enough assistance to help all the children who want to come to our school. When you donate please indicate Endowment Fund or Sponsor Program. Thank you for giving these children a chance at a quality Catholic education. You are giving them a gift that will afford them a better quality of life in the future.
