Project Info
The Family Giving Tree’s Back-to-School program began informally in 1996 (the program became formal in 2001), as our founder, Jennifer Cullenbine, recognized the need to help local low-income children with their education by providing new backpacks and necessary school supplies for a successful future. Since 2001, the Back-to-School program has provided new backpacks and school supplies to more than 62,000 children in the greater Bay Area and Silicon Valley. In 2007, the Family Giving Tree, through the generous help of its donors, provided supply-filled backpacks to students enrolled in more than 65 Title I schools.
Still, more help is needed. According to the California Department of Education, 33.5% of Santa Clara County’s students during the 2006-07 school year qualified for the California Free or Reduced Lunch Program (Title I). Similarly, 31.7% of the students in San Mateo County qualified for the Title I program as well, while 57.3% of San Francisco County students qualified.
The Family Giving Tree has a goal of raising $800, which will provide new backpacks and school supplies to 32 low-income students. That’s an entire classroom of students with new gear to start the 2008-09 school year off right! Please join us in making sure every student, regardless of income level, gets the educational opportunities they deserve.
