Project Info
Through careful breeding and puppy raising techniques, the Assistance Dog Institute places service dogs who are extremely calm and mellow. This means that we can help clients whose severe disabilities have led other service dog organizations to turn down their applications.
Our waiting list of more than 30 applicants includes people with quadriplegia, traumatic brain injuries, advanced MS, and other disabilities. Many of them live on small fixed incomes and the cost of a service dog is a huge financial burden. Sponsorships help us provide service dogs to some of these individuals who otherwise could not afford the cost of the dog and the training.
All of our service dogs are trained to pick up dropped items, retrieve hard-to-reach items from a counter or refrigerator, for example, turn lights on and off, and open and close doors. Once a dog is matched with his or her partner, we also train specialized skills needed for that partner. For example, a dog might be taught to provide balance assistance or to nudge a person’s paralyzed limb if it falls off the wheelchair armrest or the bed, or to help a Parkinson’s patient recover from a “freeze.”
