PROJECT
Pigeon Fever Recovery Project
This project covers medical bills, treatments, special supplements, bandages, and other crucial needs we have already had to pay for to treat Pigeon Fever in our horses. There are other things that our money was intended for, especially hay, so we would be grateful for your help in recovering from our sudden expenses that a tiny bacterium has caused.

Horses enrich many of our lives. Whatever involvement you have with horses, as an owner guardian, rider, or someone who has supported Redwings in the past, we come to you at this time for help.
This year has been particularly hard for our organization. Redwings’ horses have suffered with Pigeon Fever. This highly contagious disease hit our ranch early this summer, causing 17 of our horses to have painful abscesses and serious accompanying problems. Our older horses with less powerful immune systems had the worst cases; two had to be euthanized after unsuccessfully battling this bacterium. We are only now clearing up our last case: a mare, Lacey, who came to us three months pregnant. Two of our previously injured racehorses have had leg swelling caused by the disease getting into the tissues of the legs. Luckily, many of our horses escaped contracting the disease. There is no prevention, no vaccine, and is spread by the winds of the area. It started to our south, then worked through our ranch, moving up the Salinas Valley like wildfire. The cost of the care of our sick horses has put a severe burden on our finances. These horses are essential in our education programs, and we hope they win this war against a terrible and tiny enemy. Please help us maintain our ability to aid those who need help, while caring for our own rescued horses.
Thank you for considering a generous donation to the equines of Redwings Horse Sanctuary.
