The Assosa Hospital, in western Ethiopia, is the only hospital to care for 600,000 people living in a region the size of West Virginia. Within Ethiopia, this western region is termed the "Forgotten Region" because it rarely receives government support or attention from international relief agencies.
The Assosa Hospital has an operating budget of $70,000 a year and cannot afford to maintain the hospital facilities, let alone stock the pharmacy. A 100-bed facility, most of the hospital beds and children cribs are broken, covered in maggots, and ripped to shreds. Struggling with such unsanitary conditions, the Director of the hospital once said, "I am worried that the patients arrive with one disease and leave with another."
A 501(c) (3) charity, Streams of Life International's goal is create a change for this forgotten region. A volunteer-run organization, SOLI was founded in 2005 by a recent college graduate, Ashley Noah, as a campaign to collect bed sheets for the hospital. Since then, the organization has expanded to not only supply bed sheets and beds for the hospital, but refurbish the entire facility, provide clean water wells for the entire region, distribute mosquito nets, offer medical clinics and pharmacies free for the community, and more. Twice a year, American volunteers travel to this region to provide support in construction and medical activities.
To ensure that your donation will go directly to this rewarding cause, Streams of Life International has established an office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This office is run by volunteer Ethiopians who are dedicated to serve their country. These volunteers will personally travel with the bed delivery to the hospital and oversee their set-up. As a completely volunteer-run organization, administrative costs are minimal.
One bed costs $325. Consider how you will get involved and make a difference. Can you give $3.25? $32.50? $325? $3,250? Anything you can give will make a difference in such an impoverished region!
