Project Info
The Center for a New Generation (CNG) after school program, a program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, was established at the James Flood Magnet School (Flood) in Menlo Park, CA in 1991. Since that time, the CNG model has expanded to three additional schools. Currently, CNG @ Flood serves 130 2nd – 8th grade students from the Ravenswood City School District where 50% of youth do not graduate from high school and 80% are not proficient in English or math.
CNG is a highly structured academically focused program, which links activities to state standardized curricula. The program focuses on preparing 7th and 8th graders for high school and college through its 7th and 8th Grade Academy and focuses on helping the younger youth become proficient in English and math. Through positive relationships with adult mentors, volunteer tutors and a strict daily attendance policy, CNG has proven to be successful with nearly all of its graduating 8th graders entering private high schools and its younger members being recognized publicly for showing leadership and receiving good grades.
In addition to academics, CNG also provides supplemental extra curricular activities in art and recreation. Currently, CNG offers sports teams and a drama group, but there is no creative outlet for the students who are most turned on and energized by music.
And that’s where your donation is critically important!
For years, CNG @ Flood had a great marching band program as part of its extracurricular offerings. However, because of staff turnover and budget restrictions the marching band was disbanded. Sadly, all of the instruments and uniforms have remained untouched since.
This year the staff and volunteers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula are committed to reviving the band, which was for so long a source of pride for the Club and for the Flood School. Reviving the marching band will help the principal realize her goal of making Flood the prestigious school it once was in the district. It will also engage CNG members in a new way and in turn increase the retention rate and CNG’s impact.
Here is how your gift will help Flood and its students. The “Music, Music, Music” project will provide support for the marching band consisting of 25 5th-8th graders, who will meet 2-3 times each week. Your support will allow the Clubs to hire a part-time music teacher, and to buy new drumsticks, mouthpieces for trumpets and reeds for both clarinets and saxophones.
In addition, as part of the new music program at CNG, 40 2nd-4th graders will learn to play and read music using the recorder. These students will then enter the Marching Band when they are in the 5th grade with proficient music skills. Your donation will allow us to buy the recorders and the tutorial sessions for the younger students. Finally, to help these talented young students express their pride, the project will provide each child with a t-shirt, which they will wear for winter and end of year public performances.
