From the teacher:
"Learning about geometry in math can be both confusing for students as well and meaningless. I cringe at the sound of students saying, "When will I ever use this again." As sad as it is for many of my students, they might never use these concepts again outside of school and never be able to apply the value of lines, angles, symmetry, reflection, flips, turns, and slides. Just over 67% of my 50 fifth grade students receive free and reduced lunches and we live in a rural, southern area of Louisiana.
I would like to give geometry new meaning by making a class quilt. We will use real fabric and quilt block patterns to sew blocks. The students will have to measure, identify symmetry and patterns as well as flips and turns. They will also figure area and perimeter in a way that they never have before - real life! After making our quilt, we will donate our quilt to a United States military veteran of our community and invite him/her to our class for a reception."
