From the teacher:
"One of the activities that the Spanish department consistently practices is journal writing. I have made it a yearly requirement for the students to buy 5-subject notebooks that they keep for the entire year to make their journal entries. I have found from previous experience that these notebooks work best because students do not run out of paper mid-year. Also, they have compartments for note-taking, class work, vocabulary, and grammar practice. Many of our students, however, come from low-income families and therefore find it difficult to either make the trip to a school supply store or have the money to buy these notebooks.
The 5-subject notebooks would be kept in the classroom so that I can read their entries. The journal topics range from socially economic disadvantages in our society to family issues such as trust and love. These journals are a springboard for further discussions, in order for my students to get their thoughts together before sharing with their peers or to the entire class. It also serves a secondary function of allowing shy individuals to participate and earn class credit because they have a method of communication that does not put them in the spotlight. I have found that the journals are a great way to get discussions, debates, and lectures started because the pupils have an experience or opinion to share, which serves as a lead way into pieces of literature that we are reading or listening to via radio broadcasts."
