Proyecto Itzaes, a 501(c)(3) California non-profit organization works to provide resource that increase literacy and expand knowledge of health and the environment in the villages of Dzemul, Ixil, Cholul, Chicxulub Pueblo and Mococha, Yucatan Mexico. Approximate total number of people served in these six villages is 25,000 per year. In 2006, more than 6,000 new books were brought into circulation in the villages. Proyecto Itzaes programs are open to all members of the community free of
charge. In 2006, Proyecto Itzaes expanded it programs to include: Science in the Villages Ecology Program, Kids and Seeds, a project to archive native plant seeds, biodiversity programs, archiving of traditional ecological knowledge, diabetes education programs, the Bring Me a Book Program, drama programs, puppet theatre productions and gardens.
