About our Charity
Founded: 1952
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS), now in its 55th season, is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast. Founded over five decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, the SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The musicians of the SJYS, ranging in age from 8 to 21, are chosen from more than 400 applicants in annual auditions. The SJYS comprises five distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras, two string ensembles and a flute choir. Each ensemble performs three subscription concerts every season in San Jose. SJYS ensembles rehearse weekly from September through early June. In addition to their work with SJYS artistic staff, each ensemble receives the benefits of sectional coaching from professional musicians. All musicians participate in a weeklong summer camp, which takes place in August of each year.
SJYS is proud of the free concerts it has performed for various organizations in and around the community. In the 2003-2004 season SJYS launched its "Music Matters” program to bring music education back to elementary school students. Music Matters teaches instrumental music to over 100 children in after-school classes at four San Jose elementary schools.
