About our Charity
Founded: 2004
Georgia Canines for Independence is a 501-c-3 nonprofit, which places service dogs nationally to increase the independence of children and adults with physical disabilities and other special needs. Each assistance dog learns over 80 commands and performs skills such as opening / closing doors, turning on / off lights, retrieving dropped or needed items, and pulling wheelchairs. Each service dog is given away at absolutely no charge. In addition, during their two years of training, each assistance-dog-in-training participates in GCI's animal-assisted therapy programs which involve recreational therapy for children with developmental disabilities and canine visitations to schools, nursing homes, and hospices. All therapy services are also provided absolutely free of charge! Each canine has a positive impact on hundreds of lives on their way to becoming a lifelong companion and partner for someone in need.
