The Institute of Urban Living Inc.(IUL) is a community non-profit that provides social service support to low income individuals and families in the District of Columbia. IUL's current focus is providing housing and support services for homeless women with a mental health diagnoses. This project is called Hyacinth's Place and is designed to serve 15 women, seven of whom are elderly. Hyacinth's place provides the security of individual efficiency units, vocational/educational programs, medication management and intensive case-management services. It is a place where women are given the opportunity to address those issues that have brought them to the point of homelessness and to establish goals intended to return them to their families and society as responsible, capable individuals.
