The mission of the Parent Teacher Association:

To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children;
To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children;
To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.
The purpose of the Houston ISD Council is to

Unify and strengthen local units comprising the Houston Council.

Provide for the conference and cooperation of the local PTAs/PTSAs in council membership so as to create a public opinion favorable to the interests of child welfare; to encourage child welfare projects in the various local units; and, to assist in the formation of new PTAs according to the plan of the Texas PTA.

Promote the interest of the National PTA and of the Texas PTA within its territory that does not duplicate the work of area or local PTAs.

This organization also has given scholarships to students in both regular and special education classes to attend college, universities, or trade schools of their choice
