The Little Squirt Hernia Project

Charity: Humane Society Silicon Valley. Categories: Animals . Since the release of the Chihuahua movie, we've seen a huge influx of these little dogs surrendered to shelters. Many of the puppies we've rescued from public shelters have been surrendered, likely by back yard breeders, due to hernias. Rather than fix the hernia surgically, these little babies get dumped at the shelter when they are typically too young to make it on their own!

Binky's Breakfast and other special diets

Charity: Humane Society Silicon Valley. Categories: Animals Community Health . Binky is just one of many sweet but obese cats whose life has been saved by prescriptions foods and care from HSSV.

Binky’s story:
Binky, a ten-year-old whie, male cat came into our shelter weighing a whopping 23lbs 8½ oz. He was so obese that it was very difficult for our vets to be able to palpate his internal organs to make sure they were of normal size or to detect any other abnormalities in the abdomen. Binky also had lameness of the front legs attributed to the stress placed on them from his excessive weight. Binky’s eyes were squinty and crusted with discharge making it almost impossible to see that he has beautiful blue eyes. We found this was because his eyelashes were rubbing on his corneas due to the fat on his face, causing his eyelids to roll inward. Our vets felt that with proper weight loss, Binky’s illnesses might correct themselves.

Since being at the shelter, Binky has been on a special diet of w/d canned food and r/d dry food in strict amounts. With this diet and some exercise now that he is feeling better, Binky has been able to slowly lose more than 13% of his body weight .

We hope you’ll help us raise the necessary funds to supplement our usual budget for this special food that helps us save so many precious lives!

Help Fund a Successful Humane Education Program

Charity: Humane Society Silicon Valley. Categories: Animals Children and Youth Community Education Health Human Rights Social Services . “Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.”
That was how one student responded to the question about what he learned after the conclusion of last year’s Caring Communities program.
That simple thought says it all. Learning to connect with a living being creates a ripple effect through out that individual’s life impacting parents, siblings, other relatives and friends. 95% of the students from Spring 08 said that the Caring Communities program changed the way they thought about pets.

Caring Communities is the Humane Society Silicon Valley’s on-going outreach program to elementary age school children. It costs $500 in supplies for each 8 week program.

CATS: Being homeless doesn't have to mean living without hope!

Charity: Humane Society Silicon Valley. Categories: Animals Community . Even though homeless cats traditionally have shortened life spans, with your help, Humane Society Silicon Valley can help stem the tide of the thousands of kittens that are born homeless each year - and over time, stop the cycle of uncertainty and pain for these helpless creatures. With your support, HSSV will be able to provide spay and neuter surgeries for homeless cats at a minimal cost to caring community members. If we spay and neuter 4,800 cats per year, we will see a decline in the number of homeless cats by roughly 10% each year in our community - and more importantly, we will see a decrease in the number of cats and kittens euthanized at public shelters!
